What Is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is a branch of dental care that focuses on restoring oral health and repairing any structural damage to the teeth. Whether it’s from decay, injury, or wear and tear, restorative dentistry can help preserve, restore, and strengthen the natural function and appearance of your child’s smile.

Some of the restorative dentistry services we offer at Pines Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics include filling, stainless-steel crowns, and white crowns. To learn more about the restorative dentistry services we offer and what they are used for, please read below!

White Fillings

A dental filling is used when the tooth has been damaged due to decay. During this procedure, any decay will be removed from the tooth and a dental filling will be applied to fill the area and restore the tooth’s shape and strength. At Pines Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we use white fillings which allow us to match the color of your child’s teeth. This means your child can get back to smiling with confidence after their dental work is done, as there is no visible evidence that they have a filling!

The benefits of white fillings when compared to metal restorations include the following:

  • They are more aesthetically pleasing.
  • They can bond to the tooth better, providing a stronger hold.
  • The material is less conductive, so the tooth is less sensitive to hot and cold temperatures.
  • They contain no mercury or other metals.

Stainless-Steel Crowns (Silver Caps)

Stainless-steel crowns can be used to restore a child’s tooth when it has been damaged due to decay or injury. While using a filling is usually the first choice, a crown may be needed if the decay or damage is too extensive. Unlike a filling, which is added to the tooth and integrated into the structure, a stainless-steel crown is placed over the entire tooth structure and covers it completely. This provides stronger protection for the weakened tooth and fully restores its function and health.

Stainless-steel crowns are silver in color which looks very different from the natural color of the tooth. Because this option is not as aesthetically pleasing as other alternatives, we will typically only recommend this for primary teeth, or teeth that are in the back of the mouth.

Pediatric White Crowns

If your child needs a crown, but the affected tooth is not easily hidden, a white crown may be recommended. These are made of either porcelain or ceramic and can be matched to the natural color of your child’s tooth—making them virtually indistinguishable from the other teeth.

White crowns are a great restorative dentistry option for permanent teeth, as they provide strength and durability while also looking natural. These can be used for all teeth and are just as dependable as crowns made from stainless steel.
